Braided Crocheted Scarf

UPDATE: My scarves are now for sale on Etsy! Check out my shop and buy a custom or pre-made scarf by me!

First time I'm showing my face on here! So, I really like this scarf. It was super quick to make and a twist on normal scarves! I got the idea from a pin from the blog Baby Night Night Crafts
I didn't make a pictured tutorial for this one but I will tell you the pattern is:

Start with some chain stitches
(depends on your desired length) I have a loose stitch so I believe I made around 60-100
Double crochet back onto the chain
Repeat for a total of five rows of double crochets(not including chain)
x3
Take your three "mini scarves" and braid them together (I braided them rather loosely!)Then sew your ends to make it an infinity and you're all set! I want to try three different colors next!

    8. This is just gorgeous! One of the members of my crochet group made this with variegated yarn and it looks absolutely stunning. It's been so popular in the group (we have 14k members, lol) that I've added a link to your pattern in Ravelry. (You've been correctly credited). Just lovely. xoox

    10. I've made 4 of these and am having fun. I like that your pattern is simple and can be changed to make it mine. I"ve made on that is variegated and differnet texture yarns. Thank you. I am going to try your other pattern this week too.

    13. I have my three minis made. Do I need to block? When I braid it looks messy. Do you need to keep them flat while braiding?

    14. That is so cute, must try.

    15. Just made this scarf this week. It is so easy to do...can make up in a few hours, but it looks so complicated when worn. Everyone at my crochet class was very impressed!

    1. Hi! Thank you :) I used "I Love This Yarn", the acrylic soft kind (I'll link a full description below). And I used a 5.5mm aluminum hook.

    2. Kristi...how many skeins of yarn did you use? 1 or 2? Or more?

    3. This is a very, very late reply, but may help others as well. I used just one skein of I Love This Yarn (approx 350 yards I believe)

  7. How did you sew the ends together? ( getting back into crochting)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I just connect the ends together with loops. It's sort of hard to explain because it is so simple. I hope to make a video of how I do it in the future. In the mean time I'm sure there are similar videos on youtube of great ways to do it :)

      Delete
    2. do you overlap the 3 mini's or connect them as 3 separate ones?

      Delete
    3. Do you put the 3 mini scarves side by side and sew them that way or do you stack the 3 ends up and then sew them together.

      Delete
  8. Im trying to get the "desired length" and I started with a chain of 80, I'm done one mini scarf and it looks short, should I got ahead hoping it will seem longer later or if its tight should I start over with a longer chain?

Any advice from those of you who tried, love this scarf though! Thanks

    1. Keep in mind the scarf will shrink based on how tightly you braid the strands together! If you want a loose braid, like mine, it will only "shrink" about 6 inches or so. so lay the miniscarf around your neck and subtract 6 inches and see what you think!

      Delete
    2. Hi, I'm just learning to crochet and was wondering why it will shrink. Am I supposed to wash the scarf after the ends are sewed together? Or will it just shrink naturally after time?

      Thanks, Rachel

  9. How are the ends connected.
And how many twists or braids to get it to look like yours.

    1. I did a very loose braid. I don't think it was more than 5 twists, but just experiment :) None will look exactly the same because of yarn thickness, length, crochet technique, etc. That's what makes this so unique :)

  10. Love this cute pattern! Some aides at my church found this pattern on Pinterest and wanted to know if I could teach them to make this...none of them know how to crochet. I came home to try it out...I mixed colors...2colors per mini scarf...a little funky...but it's cute!

I used Vanna's Choice and a 5.5 hook and went up to 90 ch at beg and it's still too small. I must crochet much tighter than you...I'll either try with bulky weight next time or chain more at beg.

Such a cute pattern! Thank you for sharing!!

    1. Thanks so much for the comment! I am so happy to see people are enjoying this scarf so much! If you and your friends at church would like to post pictures in a comment I would love to see them!

yes, I crochet somewhat loosely because I go very fast, and I find it easily to buzz right along with larger loops haha. but that is not to say it would look very cute with a tighter stitch! I would love to see it shorter as well :)

  11. Made this last night with three different shades of purple I had left over from Christmas gifts. The yarn was Lion Brand Hometown USA, pretty chunky stuff and I used a "P" hook. I struggled with keeping the braid and connecting the ends. I'm going to keep experimenting, thanks so much for sharing!

    3. Just a thought, but you could hold the ends together with stitch markers or large safety pins so you don't have to fight with keeping the braid together. I just found this and haven't tried it yet, but I think that might work. I bet the purple is super cute. :D

  19. I'm not getting it from your directions.. :(

  20. I think you mean chain 160, there's no way that can be only 60 stitches long using a 5.5 hook, unless you're working with SUPER chunky yarn. I'm working on mine now, and made it 160 stitches using medium weight Lion Brand Vanna's Choice. Otherwise it's a great pattern! I'm thinking of attaching the seams using a large satin ribbon bow in the corner.

    1. Definitely NOT 160. I did 160 as you mentioned and it was so long it has to be doubled to be worn! No more than 90-100 to give the length she has shown.

    2. Definitely NOT 160. I made it with 160 as suggested and it is so long it has to be doubled to be worn. No more than 90-100 to get the length shown with 5.5 hook!

  21. The 160 and 60 makes a little more sense to me too. I just chained 60 and I don't think it would even fit my daughter. :) Thanks for figuring out the pattern though. I love the original too. You did a great job Kristi!

  22. With mine, I looked at the picture and did 120 on each side (blue) and white down the middle. Might use 160 next time. When it was all braided, it was not long enough to wrap around the neck. Love the scarf!! Thank you!!

  27. Now a wee problem! Is this American Double Crochet? I am from Northern Ireland so I think maybe we call this Treble Crochet!!! Also how much yarn do we require?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I finished this a couple of days ago. Yes, our double crochet is your treble crochet. (http://crochet.about.com/od/conversioncharts/a/termtranslate.htm) If you use the same color for all three "strands" of the scarf, it will only take one 7 oz/200g skein. If you use more than one color, you will only need one skein of each. Hope that helps.

  28. I finished the three "mini" scarves ... getting ready to braid and sew them! I used double stranded yellow on baby yellow ... soft and pretty ... I used one good sized "ball" of yarn each. :)

  31. How many ounces of yarn did this take? I'm not sure how much of a 'ball' is. :/ I have 2 ounces of a tiny ball of yarn and I'm trying to make good use of it. I'm also going shopping for yarn tonight and I want to try and make this. Wanna make sure I have enough yarn to make more than one! thanks in advance!

  48. I found this a couple weeks ago - THANK YOU!! for leaving it up!! Made my sis one for Christmas using 3 colors each mini scarf (red, smokey gray & black) -- i just hadta try! But wrapped the colors around so one color's in the middle then 2rounds of the next and 2 rounds of the final - each is different middle color! I used Heartland medium worsted and 150 chain at the beginning, but will use more chain next time as this will not wrap around the neck again =) ... But not sure it should either!
THANK YOU!! Now to figure out sewing the ends....!

  49. How do we braid the 3mini scarfs together ,i am having trouble

    ReplyDelete
  50. I found that using safety pins at the ends when you are ready to join works well. Then just use the same color wool of each piece to whip stitch together with a darning needle. Then I tacked all three pieces together at the back of the neck to hold them all in place.
